Dr. Sarah Clark Cleghern sees patients at our Pell City and Trussville offices. Dr. Cleghern’s clinical focus is on the diagnosis and management of ocular diseases, as well as comprehensive eye care for adults and children. She is experienced in providing care for patients with a myriad of conditions, including ocular injuries and infections, cataracts, uveitis, keratoconus, strabismus, amblyopia, macular degeneration, glaucoma, and systemic diseases that can affect the eyes (for example–diabetes, hypertension, and rheumatoid arthritis). She also co-manages patients before and after surgical procedures, such as cataract surgery, eyelid surgery, retina surgery, corneal transplants, and LASIK.
Dr. Cleghern obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, with a minor in Political Science, from Samford University, where she graduated cum laude. She earned her Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. As part of her training, she completed internship rotations in Birmingham, Nashville, and Atlanta, in specialty areas including glaucoma, retina, pediatrics, cornea/cataracts, advanced contact lens fitting (RGPs/scleral lenses), and oculoplastics. After graduating from optometry school, Dr. Cleghern completed a residency in Ocular Disease at VisionAmerica of Birmingham (through UAB).
Through the Volunteer Optometric Service to Humanity (VOSH) and Remote Area Medical (RAM) organizations, Dr. Cleghern has helped provide eye care and glasses to patients in rural areas of Alabama and Tennessee, as well as internationally in Honduras, Colombia, Grenada, and Nicaragua. She was selected for membership in Gold Key International Optometric Honor Society for outstanding leadership and service. Dr. Cleghern continues to volunteer in the greater Birmingham area through Cahaba Valley Health Care.
Dr. Cleghern is a member of the Birmingham Area Optometric Society, the Alabama Optometric Association, and the American Optometric Association. She is also actively involved with the Pell City Kiwanis Club. Dr. Cleghern became a Fellow of the AmericanAcademy of Optometry in 2015. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, hiking, reading, and spending time with her husband, Trenton.
