What Happens During My Annual Eye Exam?

What Happens during my Annual Eye Exam?

Most people already know about the importance of preventive vision care. The best way to take care of vision problems is to keep them from happening in the first place. But sadly, most people will skip their yearly comprehensive eye exams.

There are a number of reasons why this happens. Many people believe that if there is a problem, they would notice it. Sometimes people don’t have insurance so they don’t think they can afford it.

But other people avoid it out of fear. They aren’t sure what happens at an annual eye exam so they simply opt out of going.

The Ins and Outs of Eye Exams

In truth, there is nothing mysterious that happens during your yearly eye exam. It’s not scary or painful but it is necessary for the health of your eyes.

Your eye doctor will conduct your eye exam. They will want to know about your health history and any previous vision problems. You should always let them know about any medications you are taking.

Your eye doctor will examine your eyes to assess their health and determine if you have any underlying problems. They also have a special instrument called a slit lamp to examine the inside of your eyes. It allows them to examine the lens of your eye and your retina.

And you will also take a test to assess both your distance vision and your reading vision. Your eye doctor will also look for eye coordination and how well your eyes are working together.

After the Exam

Your eye doctor now has a wealth of information about the health of your eyes and any special requirements you have. If necessary, you will be given a new prescription for glasses or contacts. And if your doctor suspects there is a problem you will be given information on any further testing that is needed.

Feel free to ask your doctor to explain anything that you don’t understand. And be sure to find out when you need to come back for your next exam.
