Dr. Fred Setzer earned his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his Doctorate of Optometry from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry in 1975. He served as both Assistant Professor and Director of Continuing Education for the UAB School of Optometry before entering private practice from 1981 to 1991.
Dr. Fred Setzer joined Sarah J. Hays, M.D. in 1991 and was Director of The Refractive Surgery Center in Birmingham, Alabama and Assistant Center Director with Birmingham Omega Health Systems, Inc. until 1998. Dr. Setzer joined Montgomery Eye Physicians from 1999 until 2007 and served as the Medical Director of their refractive surgery program.
He is a Fellow with the American Academy of Optometry and a member of both the American Optometric Association and Birmingham Area Optometric Society of Alabama.
Dr. Setzer sees patients at our Homewood and Alabaster offices while seeing pre and post-surgical patients at the Homewood office.
He and his wife, Nancy, have three children and two grandchildren.
