LASIK Giving Back to Children

VisionFirst Chooses Sight Savers America as its Charity Partner

VisionFirst Eye Center is proud to announce that Sight Savers America, a Birmingham-based nonprofit organization, will be their charity partner again for 2016. This year VisionFirst will donate $50 to Sight Savers America for every LASIK surgery that is performed throughout 2016.  Additionally, the four VisionFirst locations will also be collecting donations from patients and staff members who wish to contribute to this effort throughout the year. The donations received by Sight Savers America will be used to provide life changing Electronic Video Magnifiers (EVMs) for children with severe visual impairment. EVMs will open the world to children by allowing them to magnify images up to 79x and read, write and do homework unassisted.

Since 2013, VisionFirst has contributed  $12,500 to Sight Savers America to purchase five EVMs for six children, which included a pair of siblings. The retail price for each EVM is valued at $2,500. The children that received the machines have all discovered the freedom of independently reading, writing and performing daily tasks.

Sight Savers America is a non-profit organization that provides comprehensive eye care and services at no charge for underserved children in Alabama.  “Sight Savers America is very appreciative that VisionFirst has chosen to make a huge impact on children with severe visual impairment. These children face significant challenges in school and life because of their eye condition, but an EVM can help level the playing field and inspire these kids to achieve greater goals,” says Jeff Haddox, CEO and Founder of Sight Savers America. “We at VisionFirst are excited to be partnering again with Sight Savers America and find it very fulfilling” says Dr. Mark Bearman, ophthalmologist at VisionFirst Eye Center. “We’re happy about making a  difference in a child’s vision through Sight Savers.”
